Whisper
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world..." (Romans 12:2)
Goodness! For me, that line from Paul's letter to the early Jesus followers in Rome rings just as relevant today. Instead, live as LOVE invites you to live. Give undue grace. Share unearned forgiveness. Offer ludicrous amounts of active care for the people around you.
For me, all the ancient faith leaders are trying in their own way to ask us something like this... "I know everyone else is acting a certain way, but can't you hear God's whisper inviting you to live with your heart wide open and with love bursting out of you?"
Anyway... I was just thinking about all you wonderful people who are signed up for these "BETWEEN SACRED TEXTS."
You're the kind of folks who hear that whisper.
You're the kind of folks who are trying really hard not to conform to the pattern of the world...
How is your soul today? How can I pray for you?
Reunion
It’s Matt Mattson from BETWEEN sending you a “Sacred Text” 😇💬
I’ve been reading a lot of Thomas Merton’s writing lately. “it is precisely in the recovery of our union with our brothers in Christ that we discover God and know Him…”
I love this line. It is in our re-uniting with each other… in the healing of divisions… in the bridging of divides… in our sacred encounters with one another that we truly discover God.
In this tumultuous societal moment, this insight feels like a tearful lament. We’re being called back together.
Speaking of reuniting… there’s this bit from Genesis 33:4: “But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.”
What small act can you and I take this week to reunite with those who have become distant?
If we were warmly sharing a cup of coffee or tea today, what would we prayerfully discuss together?
Stillness
The Sacred Sound of Stillness
I almost reached for my phone this morning.
Not for a call. Not to text anyone. I just… reached.
For noise.
For the next thing.
For a headline.
For a buzz.
For a scroll that would numb my restlessness.
But I didn’t. I stopped.
And I sat still.
The stillness was awkward. Uncomfortable.
But also… holy.
Thomas Merton once said, “The world of men has forgotten the joys of silence, the peace of solitude which is necessary... for the fullness of human living.”
Stillness is not empty.
Stillness is where God whispers.
In our fast-scrolling, over-booked, endlessly divided culture — stillness is resistance.
It’s where reconnection starts.
Stillness can feel like absence. But maybe it's presence — undistracted, divine, and available to you.
Scripture for Reflection
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
A Question for You
What’s one moment of stillness you can protect today — and what do you hope to hear in it?
