Try
Our family spent last week in Ecuador on an amazing adventure/vacation. I have a million stories to share. But today I can't stop thinking about our friend Pedro, who drove us around the country.
I speak VERY MEDIOCRE Spanish. Pedro speaks ONLY Spanish and NO English. Still, somehow, we spent hours together chatting (or trying to) in the front seat of his car as we sped up and down Andean mountain roads. Probably 15% of our words made it through the mistranslations. But it was more than enough.
Our front seat chats were sacred. The content barely mattered. Our encounters were sacred because we were both choosing to try.
Trying is a sanctified choice.
To meet someone in the middle is holy.
Ancient Jewish wisdom says: “Where there is effort, there is blessing.” –Pirkei Avot 5:23
So today I ask: When has someone’s effort to connect with you felt holy? And who might need you to try a little more right now?
