MLK

In 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited the town where I currently live (Littleton, CO). The community, at the time, was struggling with the question of racial integration.

He was invited by a congregation that I currently help serve (Grace Presbyterian).

During his speech that day, he lamented, "We are struggling in the final analysis to save the soul of this nation."

I'm struck by this today because...

WE are the soul of this nation.

WE continue to struggle.

WE are the ones who need to save each other.

The national and international challenges we face are actually local, personal, and intimate.

I pray we can start the reckoning and the healing, right now, with the space between ourselves and the next person we encounter.

I also shared this reflection today on some of my social media channels.

Sitting comfortably inside an empire-shaped shell, planning our next purchase on an empire-shaped device, we share quotes from our beloved modern prophet, hoping for empire-shaped likes.

I am of the problem.

Escape will require meaningful discomfort.

May Dr. King’s memory, message, and murder deeply disturb our precious souls.
